OB Survey

What make, model, and size outboard motor do you have on your Precision?

This is how the survey stacks up:
Model Make/Model HP 2/4 Shaft Starting Power Comment
P-15 Honda BF2D 2 4 cycle Long Manual The motor is sufficient for my needs The boat is not large enough to carry anything larger and if I get into a situation where I need a larger motor, I should have my head examined.
P-165 Honda 2 4 cycle Long Manual The motor is sufficient for my needs I sail on an inland Lake Wallenpaupack in PA. Very gusty at times. Have sailed in 15-20 kph winds. The motor is great. Very reliable, and more than sufficient for this 750 lbs boat. According to my knotmeter, it moves me at usually between 3.5-4 kph. And the motor only weighs 28 lbs and has an internal gas tank. I recommend for any P-165 boat.
P-165 Honda 2 4 cycle Long Manual The motor is sufficient for my needs 0 to 5 kts across harbor entrance with incoming
swells to 6 ft. Santa Cruz Yacht Harbor, Monterey
Bay, Ca

P-18 Honda four stroke 5 4 cycle Long Manual The motor is sufficient for my needs all over US, fresh and salt water, tides, no tides
P-18 Tahotsu 3.5 2 cycle Long Manual The motor is more than I need Charlotte Harbor Florida. 12 months of the year, all wind conditions
P-18 Honda 5 4 cycle Long Manual The motor is sufficient for my needs Chesapeake Bay, Tampa Bay. Several times this season I have been out in force 5 conditions, under which I have found the horsepower needed. Also, I have gone out a longish way and had the wind die ("pull a Chesapeake"), and the horsepower helped to get back in a reasonable time. I can make about 6 Knots in wind and moderate chop.
P-18 Mercury Mariner 4 2 cycle Long Manual The motor is sufficient for my needs Small lake, moderate winds
P-18 Tohatsu 4 4 cycle Long Manual The motor is sufficient for my needs Sailing on the Pamlico River in Eastern N. Carolina, the motor has performed quite well in all respects, including a rougher than typical time during an unforseen squall.
P-18 Nissan 3.5 2 cycle Long Manual The motor is sufficient for my needs I sail in lakes. No storms so far.
P-21 Johnson 6.0 2 cycle Long Manual The motor is sufficient for my needs This model includes alternator which is handy to keep battery charged where I have a fairly long motor out of harbor
P-21 Nissan (Tohatsu) 5 4 cycle Long Manual The motor is sufficient for my needs Inland lakes. up to 35 mph winds. Motor hasn't been overcome yet. Previous motor was a Johnson Sailmaster 6hp 2 cycle. Motors about the same weight. Nissan starts easier. No oil slick, quieter, though possibly a bit more vibration.Nissan one cylinder Johnson two. Bought the 4 cyc;e when a friend pointed out the 2 cycle dumped 1/3 the oil and gas into the lake, don't need that. Even outside of environmental issues I'll buy 4 cycle from now on.
P-21 Honda 5 4 cycle Long Manual The motor is sufficient for my needs Inland lakes.
P-21 Yamaha 6 2 cycle Long Manual The motor is sufficient for my needs This motor is perfect for the boat an all conditions from calm to 30kt winds (and higher?).
Uses 100:1 oil mix so smoke is not much of a problem.
P-21 Johnson 5 2 cycle Long Manual The motor is sufficient for my needs I purchased this engine new in 1999 when I purchased the P18 - which I traded in 2001 for a 2002 P21 - It works 'ok' for me - however I can not recommend it! The engine stalls often when shifting from neural to either reverse or forward. I have been unable to correct nor has anyone else!
P-21 nissan 6 4 cycle Long Manual The motor is sufficient for my needs I only need to run at half throttle
P-21 Johnson SailMaster 6 2 cycle Long Manual The motor is sufficient for my needs I mostly day sail on a protected ocean bay that is about a 10 mile area, and avoid bad weather days and my motor probably gets an hour of use per season as I usually leave and retrieve my mooring under sail.
P-21 Nissan 5 4 cycle Long Manual The motor is sufficient for my needs Medium sized lake
P-23 Honda 8 4 cycle Long Manual The motor is sufficient for my needs The extra long shaft comes in handy when the waves get tall and especially if one or more of the crew moves to the bow and cavitation is not a problem
P-23 Tohatsu 8 2 cycle Long Manual The motor is sufficient for my needs
P-23 Honda 8 4 cycle Long Manual The motor is sufficient for my needs Mine is a 1988 model, much louder than the new ones, but still does an excellent job powering against strong tidal currents and headwinds.
P-23 Nissan 8 2 cycle Long Electric The motor is sufficient for my needs Lake Arthur Western PA . Not much current except what the wind kicks up. I have sailed Lake Erie and did not have a problem with the motor.
Very quiet for a 2 cyl.
P-23 Mariner 8 2 cycle Long Manual The motor is more than I need Since I am on a small lake, this motor reliably provides plenty of power.
P-23 Johnson Sailmaster 6 2 cycle Long Manual The motor is sufficient for my needs I sail on the Albermarle Sound, NC. It's shallow and can be rough when the wind kicks up. Motor handles it. Factory mount does not easily allow tilting of motor; can only raise it. As such, prop spins in water.
P-23 Nissan 4 4 cycle Long Manual The motor is sufficient for my needs I have to trailer everywhere - sometimes three times a week in season. This motor is light and not much of a chore to mount. It's OK with little current and winds to 20. Above 25 I use a double reefed main to help. We normally sail Yellowstone Lake. For the San Juan islands I rent a 9-10hp long shaft.
P-23 Yamaha 9.9 4 cycle Long Electric The motor is more than I need Inland lake, Minnesota
P-23 Suzuki 8 2 cycle Extra long Electric The motor is sufficient for my needs Kentucky Lake, can be a short sharp chop, 2-3 foot waves the largest, and a slow current(<1Knot) in the lake
P-23 yamaha 6 2 cycle Long Manual The motor is sufficient for my needs Lake Michigan. It works great in most conditions. A very strong breeze and substantial waves are a problem. I'ts hard to keep the prop in the water, and the progress is slow. But I have been able to make progress and get in under some pretty rough conditions.
P-23 HONDA 8 4 cycle Long Manual The motor is sufficient for my needs It is heavy around 90 lbs.but is smooth and quiet
Sail mostly on Lake in the South East ( North Carolina) but it does get choppy. Have used it in the Gulf and east coast of Florida with satisfaction.
P-23 tohatsu 2 2 cycle Short Manual The motor is underpowered for my needs inland lake
P-23 Honda (1985, ?100 model) 9.9 4 cycle Short Manual The motor is sufficient for my needs Barnegat Bay, NJ
P-23 Honda 8 4 cycle Long Manual The motor is sufficient for my needs We are sailing mostly on the Delaware. Tides and currents are a challange.
P-23 Tohatsu 5 2 cycle Long Manual The motor is sufficient for my needs sail mostly in lake, but have been in ocean (NC sound and around the Keys) Motor has been great (knock on wood) and the Tohatsu people are wonderful to work with...they answer e-mails promptly and try to help any way they can
P-23 Yamaha 9.9 4 cycle Long Electric The motor is sufficient for my needs Engine is 1991 and have only recently had to replace ignition module. It has been a very good, quite and reliable engine. Have used it many times for extended hours of motoring with no problem. Boat has been used i great lakes area, fresh water only.
P-23 Suzuki 8 2 cycle Long Electric The motor is sufficient for my needs With electric start & generator, the motor is heavy & difficult to remove & replace on the transom while trailering, but I wouldn't want anything with less power.
P-23 Nissan 6 4 cycle Long Manual The motor is sufficient for my needs Inland lake in Madison,WI
Lake Mendota 9740 acres
Reliable, fuel efficient outboard, fine for my needs on this lake. I'd wan't more power for Great Lakes or offshore sailing. I do wish it had an option for battery charging. Not a big deal for me since I primarily day-sail
P-23 Johnson - Model #J10RLEE 9.9 2 cycle Long Manual The motor is sufficient for my needs I sail at Alum Creek Lake, north of Columbus, OH. Being an inland lake, I have no current to content with, but if I did, I feel that this motor would be OK
P-23 Honda 7.5 4 cycle Long Manual The motor is sufficient for my needs Small lakes,
Chesapeake
P-23 Johnson/Sailmaster 6 2 cycle Long Manual The motor is sufficient for my needs Inland waters including the great lakes. I often go out in high winds.
P-23 Honda 7.5 4 cycle Long Manual The motor is sufficient for my needs Tampa Bay, occasional ICW with tricky currents. Went to 7.5 from a 5 HP which was underpowered in high winds/currents.
P-23 Honda 8 4 cycle Short Manual The motor is sufficient for my needs Could use a little more shaft depth on the prop for backing into docks.
P-23 Mercury 8 2 cycle Long Manual The motor is sufficient for my needs I wouldn't want any less hp. We have been in conditions where we felt like we needed all 8hp.
(Lake Ontario, and Martha's Vineyard area with currents). Could get away with less hp for our normal day-sailing inland.
P-23 Nissan 4 4 cycle Short Manual The motor is sufficient for my needs yet sometimes I think I would like the extended shaft; I wonder why the dealer did not recommend it?
P-23 Tohatsu 8 2 cycle Long Manual The motor is sufficient for my needs
P-23 Yamaha 9.9 4 cycle Extra long Electric The motor is sufficient for my needs Cruising in open lake conditions. This motor has a very effective generator for recharging, starts easily and runs quietly and economically. Prop rarely pops out of the water. On the other hand it is heavy, and needs special treatment re raising and lowering. There is a minor mod by another member of the Trailer Sailors Association, which makes the weight much easier to handle.
P-23 Honda 9.9HP 4 cycle Long Electric The motor is sufficient for my needs Chesapeake Bay. Reliable in storms. Have motored in 20 to 35 knots and 4 to 5 foot chop. 90 LB motor to lift on and off transom support. No cavitation with longshaft. Electric start is nice and has rope backup. Uses less gas than 2 stroke.
